Progress... Ish....

So the back/shoulder issue is healing up, albeit slowly. Not as much pain or numbness in the shoulder/arm/fingers but the strength is not back yet. I have been trying to bench with it, but there is just no real drive. Keeping up with sessions, doing some tricep work otherwise and a lot of back work, but the other day I couldn't get a 30lb kettlebell off my shoulder for pressing, had to roll with my 20lb bell. I'll keep working with it, but September is looking less and less likely barring a rapid turn around. I have been in class with work eight hours a day recently so I haven't gotten any further medical assessment or treatment other than the chiro work previously, but hope to get some more assessment done next week.

Otherwise, squat is feeling pretty good, which should mean the deadlift is moving in the right direction. With the extra accessory work, the back is feeling better and more stable and I have gotten a bit wider in the stance and more flexible in the hips.

Gotta be a plus somewhere, right?

More as it develops...

Into it again... the road back to Blytheville

Just a short post today- the road to the Blytheville meet in September is getting increasingly bumpy. I feel like my training is effective but not frequent enough due to work schedule. Additionally, I have been visited by what I assume to be the pinched nerve fairy.

Woke up a few days ago to what felt like a wicked muscle cramp in my left rhomboids. After trying to remedy for several hours to no avail- nay, getting worse and limiting ROM of my neck- I went to my normally scheduled training session a bit early to hit up our visiting chiropractor. After an adjustment (actually two) the ROM issues were largely fixed and most pain gone. After training and throughout the rest of the day the muscle soreness came back (ROM still good), causing me to sleep in hour fits with periods of awake between.

I went to visit a minor med center the next day, who prescribed a muscle relaxer and sent me on my merry way. Sleep was better that night when combining the cyclobenzaprine with a hydrocodone, but awoke the next morning (Monday) with numbness in all five fingers on my left hand with random shooting pains through my left shoulder and upper arm. Working the shoulder out with various stretches and band work brought the numbness to a dull roar in my left index finger and thumb. Spent the day with wife and baby, headed to the normally scheduled training session.

Here is where we start freaking out a little bit. Upon starting warm up sets for bench with bar only, my left arm was not pressing at the same rate as my right- loss of strength in the limb. Tried a few reps and got it up to speed, threw quarters on the bar and went again- notably worse. Shit canned the bench work for the day and went on to accessory work for core and back.

Tuesday - decent night's sleep with the meds and a heating pad under the shoulder whilst laying flat on my back all night (not normal for me) with a small rolled blanket under my neck, spend most of the day with baby and hit up the chiro again. More thorough adjustment and some diagnostics get the strength increased and feeling a little better, but as the day goes on the numbness in the hand and arm/shoulder return. No beuno, soldier on.

Wednesday is about the same, back to work with some ibuprofen. Decent squat session with the safety squat bar but I can feel the issue in my neck/shoulder coming in to play. Talked to one of the other guys on the team who had a similar issue in the past and got a recommendation for his chiro that fixed him up well.

Shitty night's sleep overnight into Thursday, increased pain in the arm in the morning, numbness same in the hand. Get ready for work and call new chiro who is, of course, closed on Thursdays, and soldier on. Contemplating next move if I want to go to my old chiro or try the new one tomorrow. All I know is this is getting old quickly.

So back to that rocky road, and I ain't talkin' bout no Ben and Jerry's. If this keeps up much longer I am going to have to back out of the meet and hope to make the next one in Novermber, which will be hosted by my gym. Just have to remember that this strength game is a marathon, not a sprint, and that this, too, shall pass.

Fuck. Not such a short post after all.
